Battery + Generator + Solar: Why I'm Building More Than One Backup

Each backup method covers a different length of problem. A battery power station is quiet, instant and indoor-friendly, but it holds a finite amount of energy. A generator can run far longer, but it needs fuel, maintenance, outdoor placement and attention.

I currently own and use an EcoFlow power station and a Generac GP3000i generator. The battery handles flickers and short interruptions with no thought required. The generator is the answer to the longer outage question.

The gap in that setup is replenishment. Once stored energy is used and fuel is finite, you need a way to put energy back. That is why portable solar is my next planned addition. I have not bought or tested panels yet, so I am not going to tell you how they perform.

Generators must never be operated indoors, in a garage or in any enclosed space. Fuel storage, generator operation and any connection to home wiring are safety-critical subjects — rely on the manufacturer's documentation and authoritative local guidance, not on a blog post.
